Unless you’ve been living under a rock, I’m sure you’ve heard about the Keto Diet. We get lots of questions about how our smoothies can fit into a Keto lifestyle so I wanted to share with you some basics about the diet, and give you a list of smoothies that are low enough in carbohydrates to fit into this diet plan.
To preface, I’m a dietitian, so you won’t hear me recommend the Keto diet to anyone. I have multiple concerns about the health risks that come along with a diet like this and I always have and always will recommend a balanced approach to diet. However, I also know that there are many people who follow a Keto diet and like it so there’s also no reason for me to bury my head in the sand and pretend like it’s not there. The Keto diet was originally developed for children with epilepsy who are not able to control seizures with medication. The very low carb, high fat diet forces the body to use fats as fuel instead of glucose. For a classic keto diet, the ratio of carbs to fat is 4:1. Mainstream keto diets are more varied in their macro ratios, some promote higher protein intake, others only high fat intake, but always low in carb. Generally speaking, the Keto diet encourages people to not eat more than 30 grams of carbs per day.
Smoothies from the Smoothie Shop are protein based, but they are balanced with carbohydrates as well. However, there are some that are low enough in carbohydrates to be acceptable while on a Keto diet. To make these smoothies, even more, Keto friendly, you can add MCT oil to your smoothie as a power up!
